Lessons from the Last Half Century

"America", identified over the past 200 years by "Nativist" European settlers and imperial European rulers as a "conquered area" become a sprawling Empire of its own. The former "United Colonies" now ruled by a militarized regime of secret agencies and the largest complex of warring technologies and institutions to ever arise on Earth.

One can argue that the mythical "Matrix" is an actual industrialization of extruded Roman ideals and "pseudoethics" which has now degenerated into psychopathic corruption, in which nearly clueless citizens are indoctrinated into paying for vast weapons technologies and secret surveillance systems morphed into mind-control video killprograms with "Predator" and "Hellfire" technology blasting tribal village people half a world away.

In America, the mediascape has been honed into a sophisticated hypno-hype hate machinery glossed over with air-brushed advertising, masquerading as "entertainment." The killprogramming has become so graphically obnoxious and intentionally obscene that we now chuckle along to "antiheroes" smashing heads with baseball bats, in completely simulated histories and pseudorealities, while we allow battalions to actually drop hundreds of tons of bombs on underdeveloped cultures we barely understand.

Millions of innocent people have been blown to bits, maimed, driven mad by this corrupted old evil machinery. While the "Dick Army" and their Kowboy Klique chuckle, rolling in their vast hidden hordes of WTC gold. They f*cked the whole world, not a little, but the whole shebang this time. And the headless spectacle of the corporate machinery continues to spew out its mindless control programs and diversions, refusing to address these greatest crimes against humanity, the oily realization of ancient Roman power-madness and Reaganite fascism--

The "Bushwacking" of a once proud culture, now having been reduced to shame and denial by these criminals through the historic arc of: the JFK, RFK and MLK assassinations, which have yet to be fully resolved, the expansion of the NSA and CIA under Bush, the theft of the 2000 election in Florida by the Bushes, the engineering of the 9-11 attacks on NYC, yet to be addressed on a basic scientific level, the subsequent shredding of the US Constitution, the Geneva Conventions and International Criminal treaties, the illegal invasion and destruction of Iraq and subsequent criminal profiteering and embezzlement of billions which have yet to be accounted for, the death of 100's of thousands of innocent people, false imprisonment and torture for a contrived "Terror war"-- the list of crimes is almost beyond the comprehension of the human mind, let alone the broken hearts of widows and orphans.

It's time for those who have freed themselves from the Matrix videogame hyper-scam, infotainment mind-control spectacle and fascist-corporatist indoctrination to set down our own ultimatums. It is likely the ONLY way that Obama and Clinton, the ICC and Amnesty will ever be able to enact any significant "change" within the control System. This is what we have learned from our recent truthtelling upwellings: we ARE the change we wish to make.

Therefore, it is possible the next evolution of this collective internet hyperintelligence is to form a NEW PARTY of wide diversity and representation. War & Women’s Power

The idea that “if mothers ran the world there would be no war” has been around for quite a while. Now there’s scientific research that seems to agree with that thesis.

Who among us hasn’t asked why war is such a persistent feature of human life? The most common answer is that people make war because society has taught them to make war. In their controversial book, Sex and War: How Biology Explains Warfare and Terrorism and Offers a Path to a Safer World, obstetrician and biologist Malcolm Potts and journalist Thomas Hayden claim instead that warring aggression is built into our species. There are measures we can take, however, to increase the likelihood of peace breaking out instead of war, the authors say, and their prescriptions focus mostly on empowering women.

I talked with Malcolm Potts in his office at the University of California, Berkeley, where he is the Bixby Professor in the School of Public Health.

What experiences led you to explore connections between sex and war?

I grew up in England during the Second World War in an area with several bomber bases. There were all these wonderfully brave young men. We used to see them in church. Their job was to drop bombs on Germany, bombs that would kill women and children. And of course many of them died in the effort. From a young age, then, I asked, “Why do people do this sort of thing?”

When I was older and working as a physician in war-torn areas, I saw the consequences of war firsthand and started asking the question in a more insistent way. As an obstetrician and then a biologist, I also took a strong interest in the evolution of human sexuality, and wrote a book called Ever Since Adam and Eve, which pushed my thoughts forward. They began to link up with the lingering question of why, out of the thousands of mammalian species, only humans and a few others exhibit the behavior known as team aggression, which in its most full-blown form we call “war.”

But wars are carried out by states, not small teams.

War builds on innumerable small episodes of team aggression. Wars are fought by small teams: the crew, the squad, the ten people in the trench with you. The state manipulates and organizes that, but at the level of the individual aggressor it’s still the same basic behavior.

Isn’t violence common in many species?

A lot of animals are violent for all of the obvious competitive reasons, but team aggression, which is a very costly behavior, occurs when teams of adults, almost always males, attack and kill individuals of the same species. It depends on being an intelligent social animal that has a territory and resources to guard and enlarge. For millions of years, it was an adaptive behavior: it gave a man more resources. A man with more resources would attract more sexual partners and therefore have more offspring and pass on more genes, which is what evolution is all about. Evolution is not good or bad; it’s just what works. It gives us some marvelous things, like the human eye, and some ugly things, like the fact that teams of men in the prime of life band together to murder others.

Why in teams?

Originally, the men would have been related to each other, but in the modern world a kinship can be formed through boot camp and other rituals of bonding. In the Gaza Strip, some terrorists were all members of the same football team, so they felt as if they were a “band of brothers,” as Shakespeare put it. Men in the foxholes told William Manchester that they fought not for flag or country, but for one another.

Women don’t do this?

Women will fight very bravely if they or their children are threatened, but we could not find a single example in the whole of human history where women have banded together spontaneously and systematically and deliberately gone out to kill other human beings.

Do women play a part in your theory of the sources of war-making?

Yes. Historically, women would be drawn to men with more resources. We still see this today, most starkly in situations such as poor women who went to Somalia to marry pirates, who were newly and publicly wealthy.

Does your book, then, present a pessimistic view of human beings?

It is both pessimistic and optimistic. Saying we have an innate predisposition to kill our neighbors is a somber hypothesis. But we’re doing it less frequently than we used to, which means we look at the world in a very different way now. Most people will say that the twentieth century was the most violent in human history, but in fact it was probably the most peaceful. If we look at deaths by team aggression against total population size, we’re getting much less violent. Unfortunately we also have many more low-cost technologies, like improvised explosive devices, and many more powerful technologies, i.e., weapons of mass destruction, for killing each other. So there is urgency.

Human beings present a huge contrast. We can be extraordinarily self-sacrificing, loving, and empathetic, but at the same time so violent. It seems we’ve had to evolve a sort of switch we flip to make it possible to dehumanize other people. We inherit predispositions built deep into our nature, such as a predisposition to learn language. I shouldn’t be surprised, then, that our brain has frameworks of aggression buried deep within it.

Are you saying that we have to make war? We can’t help ourselves?

No. We don’t have to do it, but I think we will more effectively deal with our violent nature if we understand it as a universal attribute from the evolutionary history of our species rather than an aberration.

So, just because a predisposition developed over a vastly long period of time because it was adaptive doesn’t mean it is permanently adaptive?

Indeed. As conditions change, it may become less adaptive, and that is certainly what I believe about war. Team aggression at the level of killing has no purpose now, but it emerges nonetheless. The evolution of our bodies is very slow, so something that took tens of thousands of years to evolve is still there to be dealt with, even after it has no seeming purpose. It’s helpful and enlightening to look at where we’ve come from in evolution. Then we can better define the things we don’t like, and ask whether we can do anything about them. We can only do that if we’re honest about where they’re really coming from. For example, if we persist in the naïve idea that all violence is culturally determined and we obscure the differences between men and women, that’s not going to get us anywhere.

So, what is going to get us somewhere?

Well, I know it sounds simplistic, but nonetheless it’s important for men to have healthy outlets for this behavioral predisposition. It must be respected. Team sports have all the elements of bonding and aggression that are the key elements in war. Also, doing activities together like climbing a mountain can draw on the same impulses. The mountain is the enemy. It satisfies some of the same urges. Yes, there are dangers, but they are more controllable than the dangers of real war, where a lot of people get killed.

What about the role of women?

It must be said, without being vulgar, that human sexual behavior is very asymmetrical. A woman has only a few pregnancies in a lifetime, whereas, all things being equal, a man could have hundreds of children in a lifetime. Gestation and child-rearing give women an inherent orientation to long-range decisions. Also, men are evolved to take risks and be territorial. Women lived in the territory carved out by men. They benefited more from in-group cooperation and social stability than out-group hostility. As a result, they tend to take a longer view and to seek consensus. As we said in the book, “If evolution provides the poison root of warfare, it has also supplied an important antidote. We overlook women’s powerful evolutionary heritage at our collective peril.”

What is that antidote?

For one, empower women with education and more opportunities and thereby also increase the number of women leaders, the number of women in parliaments and legislatures.

How do reproductive rights play a role?

We must have energetic efforts to support reproductive autonomy. When women can control their own fertility, family size begins to fall. As family size falls, education and development increase, as does the advancement of women’s role in society. Throughout the world there is plenty of demand for family planning on the part of women, but the evolved male drive to control female reproduction often stands in the way. Male theologians, male legislators, and conservative male doctors create and maintain the barriers to family planning. All in all, then, energetic efforts at empowerment of women will mitigate the effects of the warring nature we have inherited. Peace breaks out when women have more control over their bodies and more influence in their societies.

One month after Haiti quake, rain adds misery

Feb 11 (Reuters) - Rain soaked quake survivors in the tent camps of the Haitian capital on Thursday, a warning of fresh misery for the 1 million homeless living in the street one month after the devastating earthquake.

Here are some facts about the current situation in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

THE BIG PICTURE

* 212,000 people dead, the government reports.

* 3 million of 9 million population affected, 1 million now living in streets in 492 makeshift shelter camps.

* 250,000 houses destroyed

FOOD

* U.N. World Food Program says it is providing food rations to an estimated 2 million Haitians, nearly a quarter of the population, through 16 distribution sites. Nearly 1.3 million have received a two-week ration of rice in past nine days.

* Price of imported rice is 25 percent higher and wheat flour over 65 percent higher than before the quake, causing difficulty for people considered "food secure," WFP says.

* Supplementary food program launched for 53,000 children under 5 and for 16,000 pregnant women and nursing mothers.

* Florida-based Food for the Poor said it had acquired and delivered more than 7,100 tons of food, medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, building materials and other goods, and provided Haitians with more than 20 million meals of rice, beans, canned goods and water.

HEALTH AND WELFARE

* The Red Cross/Red Crescent, as of Feb. 5, had distributed 15 million litres (4 million gallons) of drinking water, provided medical treatment for 13,000 people, provided cooking sets, blankets, jerry cans, mosquito nets and hygiene kits to 37,054 families (185,270 people), tarps and rope to 17,000 households, tents to 925 households.

* Doctors Without Borders, in its most recent report, had 19 locations set up, treated 12,924 patients, performed 1,427 surgeries, had 353 foreign staff and 1,280 Haitian staff at work on the ground.

U.S. MILITARY

* More than 13,000 U.S. military personnel assigned to Haiti relief, along with 17 ships, 120 aircraft

* Has delivered 2.4 million bottles of water, 2.4 million rations, 9.1 million pounds of bulk food, 120,700 pounds of medical supplies as of Feb. 9.

JOBS

* Haitian government has declared job creation one of its most important goals. Before the quake, officials said two-thirds of Haitians did not have formal jobs.

* U.N. Development Program (UNDP) injecting $175,000 a day into economy with cash-for-work program clearing streets of rubble and garbage, employing 34,885 workers as of Feb. 6.

* U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) employing 6,000 people in cash-for-work programs, hopes to reach 20,000 soon.

CLEANUP CHALLENGE

* Edmond Mulet, acting head of the U.N. mission in Haiti, said 63 million tons of rubble need to be removed.

* "If you lined up the dump trucks, our shelter expert feels that there would be enough rubble to go from Port-au-Prince to Moscow. That's a lot of rubble," said Tim Callaghan of USAID. To Heal Haiti, Look to History, Not Nature

HAITI is everybody’s cherished tragedy. Long before the great earthquake struck the country like a vengeful god, the outside world, and Americans especially, described, defined, marked Haiti most of all by its suffering. Epithets of misery clatter after its name like a ball and chain: Poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. One of the poorest on earth. For decades Haiti’s formidable immiseration has made it among outsiders an object of fascination, wonder and awe. Sometimes the pity that is attached to the land — and we see this increasingly in the news coverage this past week — attains a tone almost sacred, as if Haiti has taken its place as a kind of sacrificial victim among nations, nailed in its bloody suffering to the cross of unending destitution.

And yet there is nothing mystical in Haiti’s pain, no inescapable curse that haunts the land. From independence and before, Haiti’s harms have been caused by men, not demons. Act of nature that it was, the earthquake last week was able to kill so many because of the corruption and weakness of the Haitian state, a state built for predation and plunder. Recovery can come only with vital, even heroic, outside help; but such help, no matter how inspiring the generosity it embodies, will do little to restore Haiti unless it addresses, as countless prior interventions built on transports of sympathy have not, the man-made causes that lie beneath the Haitian malady.

In 1804 the free Republic of Haiti was declared in almost unimaginable triumph: hard to exaggerate the glory of that birth. Hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans had labored to make Saint-Domingue, as Haiti was then known, the richest colony on earth, a vastly productive slave-powered factory producing tons upon tons of sugar cane, the 18th-century’s great cash crop. For pre-Revolutionary France, Haiti was an inexhaustible cash cow, floating much of its economy. Generation after generation, the second sons of the great French families took ship for Saint-Domingue to preside over the sugar plantations, enjoy the favors of enslaved African women and make their fortunes.

Even by the standards of the day, conditions in Saint-Domingue’s cane fields were grisly and brutal; slaves died young, and in droves; they had few children. As exports of sugar and coffee boomed, imports of fresh Africans boomed with them. So by the time the slaves launched their great revolt in 1791, most of those half-million blacks had been born in Africa, spoke African languages, worshipped African gods.

In an immensely complex decade-long conflict, these African slave-soldiers, commanded by legendary leaders like Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines, defeated three Western armies, including the unstoppable superpower of the day, Napoleonic France. In an increasingly savage war — “Burn houses! Cut off heads!” was the slogan of Dessalines — the slaves murdered their white masters, or drove them from the land.

On Jan. 1, 1804, when Dessalines created the Haitian flag by tearing the white middle from the French tricolor, he achieved what even Spartacus could not: he had led to triumph the only successful slave revolt in history. Haiti became the world’s first independent black republic and the second independent nation in the Western Hemisphere.

Alas, the first such republic, the United States, despite its revolutionary creed that “all men are created equal,” looked upon these self-freed men with shock, contempt and fear. Indeed, to all the great Western trading powers of the day — much of whose wealth was built on the labor of enslaved Africans — Haiti stood as a frightful example of freedom carried too far. American slaveholders desperately feared that Haiti’s fires of revolt would overleap those few hundred miles of sea and inflame their own human chattel.

For this reason, the United States refused for nearly six decades even to recognize Haiti. (Abraham Lincoln finally did so in 1862.) Along with the great colonial powers, America instead rewarded Haiti’s triumphant slaves with a suffocating trade embargo — and a demand that in exchange for peace the fledgling country pay enormous reparations to its former colonial overseer. Having won their freedom by force of arms, Haiti’s former slaves would be made to purchase it with treasure.

The new nation, its fields burned, its plantation manors pillaged, its towns devastated by apocalyptic war, was crushed by the burden of these astronomical reparations, payments that, in one form or another, strangled its economy for more than a century. It was in this dark aftermath of war, in the shadow of isolation and contempt, that Haiti’s peculiar political system took shape, mirroring in distorted form, like a wax model placed too close to the fire, the slave society of colonial times.

At its apex, the white colonists were supplanted by a new ruling class, made up largely of black and mulatto officers. Though these groups soon became bitter political rivals, they were as one in their determination to maintain in independent Haiti the cardinal principle of governance inherited from Saint-Domingue: the brutal predatory extraction of the country’s wealth by a chosen powerful few.

The whites on their plantations had done this directly, exploiting the land they owned with the forced labor of their slaves. But the slaves had become soldiers in a victorious revolution, and those who survived demanded as their reward a part of the rich land on which they had labored and suffered. Soon after independence most of the great plantations were broken up, given over to the former slaves, establishing Haiti as a nation of small landowners, one whose isolated countryside remained, in language, religion and culture, largely African.

Unable to replace the whites in their plantation manors, Haiti’s new elite moved from owning the land to fighting to control the one institution that could tax its products: the government. While the freed slaves worked their small fields, the powerful drew off the fruits of their labor through taxes. In this disfigured form the colonial philosophy endured: ruling had to do not with building or developing the country but with extracting its wealth. “Pluck the chicken,” proclaimed Dessalines — now Emperor Jacques I — “but don’t make it scream.”

In 1806, two years after independence, the emperor was bayoneted by a mostly mulatto cabal of officers. Haitian history became the immensely complex tale of factional struggles to control the state, with factions often defined by an intricate politics of skin color. There was no method of succession ultimately recognized as legitimate, no tradition of loyal opposition. Politics was murderous, operatic, improvisational. Instability alternated with autocracy. The state was battled over and won; Haiti’s wealth, once seized, purchased allegiance — but only for a time. Fragility of rule and uncertainty of tenure multiplied the imperative to plunder. Unseated rulers were sometimes killed, more often exiled, but always their wealth — that part of it not sent out of the country — was pillaged in its turn.

In 1915 the whites returned: the United States Marines disembarked to enforce continued repayment of the original debt and to put an end to an especially violent struggle for power that, in the shadow of World War I and German machinations in the Caribbean, suddenly seemed to threaten American interests. During their nearly two decades of rule, the Americans built roads and bridges, centralized the Haitian state — setting the stage for the vast conurbation of greater Port-au-Prince that we see today in all its devastation — and sent Haitians abroad to be educated as agronomists and doctors in the hope of building a more stable middle class.

Still, by the time they finally left, little in the original system had fundamentally changed. Haitian nationalism, piqued by the reappearance of white masters who had forced Haitians to work in road gangs, produced the noiriste movement that finally brought to power in 1957 François Duvalier, the most brilliant and bloody of Haiti’s dictators, who murdered tens of thousands while playing adroitly on cold-war America’s fear of communism to win American acceptance.

Duvalier’s epoch, which ended with the overthrow of his son Jean-Claude in 1986, ushered in Haiti’s latest era of instability, which has seen, in barely a quarter-century, several coups and revolutions, a handful of elections (aborted, rigged and, occasionally, fair), a second American occupation (whose accomplishments were even more ephemeral than the first) and, all told, a dozen Haitian rulers. Less and less money now comes from the land, for Haiti’s topsoil has grown enfeebled from overproduction and lack of investment. Aid from foreigners, nations or private organizations, has largely supplanted it: under the Duvaliers Haiti became the great petri dish of foreign aid. A handful of projects have done lasting good; many have been self-serving and even counterproductive. All have helped make it possible, by lifting basic burdens of governance from Haiti’s powerful, for the predatory state to endure.

The struggle for power has not ended. Nor has Haiti’s historic proclivity for drama and disaster. Undertaken in their wake, the world’s interventions — military and civilian, and accompanied as often as not by a grand missionary determination to “rebuild Haiti” — have had as their single unitary principle their failure to alter what is most basic in the country, the reality of a corrupt state and the role, inadvertent or not, of outsiders in collaborating with it.

The sound of Haiti’s suffering is deafening now but behind it one can hear already a familiar music begin to play. Haiti must be made new. This kind of suffering so close to American shores cannot be countenanced. The other evening I watched a television correspondent shake his head over what he movingly described as a “stupid death” — a death that, but for the right medical care, could have been prevented. “It doesn’t have to happen,” he told viewers. “People died today who did not need to die.” He did not say what any Haitian could have told him: that the day before, and the day before that, Haiti had seen hundreds of such “stupid deaths,” and, over the centuries, thousands more. What has changed, once again, and only for a time, is the light shone on them, and the volume of the voices demanding that a “new Haiti” must now be built so they never happen again.

Whether they can read or not, Haiti’s people walk in history, and live in politics. They are independent, proud, fiercely aware of their own singularity. What distinguishes them is a tradition of heroism and a conviction that they are and will remain something distinct, apart — something you can hear in the Creole spoken in the countryside, or the voodoo practiced there, traces of the Africa that the first generation of revolutionaries brought with them on the middle passage.

Haitians have grown up in a certain kind of struggle for individuality and for power, and the country has proved itself able to absorb the ardent attentions of outsiders who, as often as not, remain blissfully unaware of their own contributions to what Haiti is. Like the ruined bridges strewn across the countryside — one of the few traces of the Marines and their occupation nearly a century ago — these attentions tend to begin in evangelical zeal and to leave little lasting behind.

What might, then? America could start by throwing open its markets to Haitian agricultural produce and manufactured goods, broadening and making permanent the provisions of a promising trade bill negotiated in 2008. Such a step would not be glamorous; it would not “remake Haiti.” But it would require a lasting commitment by American farmers and manufacturers and, as the country heals, it would actually bring permanent jobs, investment and income to Haiti.

Second, the United States and other donors could make a formal undertaking to ensure that the vast amounts that will soon pour into the country for reconstruction go not to foreigners but to Haitians — and not only to Haitian contractors and builders but to Haitian workers, at reasonable wages. This would put real money in the hands of many Haitians, not just a few, and begin to shift power away from both the rapacious government and the well-meaning and too often ineffectual charities that seek to circumvent it. The world’s greatest gift would be to make it possible, and necessary, for Haitians — all Haitians — to rebuild Haiti.

Putting money in people’s hands will not make Haiti’s predatory state disappear. But in time, with rising incomes and a concomitant decentralization of power, it might evolve. In coming days much grander ambitions are sure to be declared, just as more scenes of disaster and disorder will transfix us, more stunning and colorful images of irresistible calamity. We will see if the present catastrophe, on a scale that dwarfs all that have come before, can do anything truly to alter the reality of Haiti.

A huge chance for Haiti to be great again

The morning after the earthquake in Haiti, I arrived in my mother country and I walked into Armageddon. I want to tell you that story, but that is not the story I want to tell you first. The earthquake is Haiti’s present, and I want to talk about Haiti’s past, because in that past lies the hope for my native island’s future.

That may surprise some of you. When you think of the history of Haiti, it is probably the recent one, of natural and political disaster. What hope, you may think, lies there? If you do not know much about Haiti, you may already think you have heard enough. “Haiti, the poorest nation in the western hemisphere”, as is repeated so often. That is only part of the picture. We are not doomed. Haiti may be the poorest nation in the West, but it is the richest in culture.

I know that many people I meet, in Europe and America, do not even have a geographical understanding of Haiti — they picture it only as Port au Prince, and they are not aware that the Dominican Republic and Haiti is the same island. They do not realise how safe, or how wonderful the rest of the country is outside the capital. They have no idea there is a coastline that has some of the most beautiful beachfront properties in the world, that amazes the visitors I bring — and that not a single one of them, by the way, has failed to have a great time. Every year luxury cruises stop at a thriving Haitian port called Labadee. It is only years later that a lot of those tourists find out, actually, they were in Haiti.

That is even before I begin on Haiti’s economic and architectural heritage. Have you heard of the Haiti that was so prosperous they called it Pearl Island? Of a country that was an export powerhouse, and not just in colonial times? It wasn’t so long ago that the baseballs in America were manufactured in Haiti. Did you know that in 1804 the people of Haiti defeated Napoleon, and became the first black republic and the second republic in the western hemisphere? And that, uniquely, allowed West African culture to flourish in the Caribbean, untampered with? That it is home of the Citadel, the castle on top of the island, that is the eighth wonder of the world?

So this is why I get angry when people write off Haiti. History does not lie. Has Haiti ever thrived before? Absolutely — through industry, trade and tourism. The question is now: how to get it back like that. Haiti was great, and could be, if we can only get the post-earthquake recovery reconstruction right, great again. This is an enormous chance for Haiti, and it will take the right government, and international community of business leaders. But the people of Haiti are strong. That is why they are worth investing in. We need an imaginative, ambitious Marshall Plan for Haiti that does not cave in to despair, but builds on its past glory. We Haitians have strong memories.

My parents left our dirt village when I was only one, escaping a dictatorship, and in search of a better life. They did not manage to get me to their new American home until I was 10. I cannot feel guilt that I got out. But I have made sure that I have always turned around and looked back at the place I came from.

I was talking to a friend in Haiti on the phone when the earthquake struck. “I can feel some shaking,” she said. Then the line went dead. The next thing I got was a text from her to say: “I’m running down the hill to get my kids,” then nothing.

When I made it in to Haiti, hours later, my first image was of dead bodies, strewn across the entire city. You could hear survivors still screaming from inside crumbled buildings. People were wandering the streets with bones hanging out, broken necks, mothers running with bleeding children in their arms, begging for help.

I got inside the belly of the beast: doing what I could, picking up the bodies and putting tags on them for a decent burial. I found out that I had lost at least 15 relatives. There isn’t anyone who has not lost someone. It was not until I got back to New York that I could let the tears flow. I did not want to show those people any sign that I wouldn’t be there for them.

Do I want to be President of Haiti? No. But I have to be part of rebuilding a 21st-century Haiti by any means necessary. The first step in a new Marshall Plan for Haiti is to evacuate Port au Prince — the capital has always been where the problems were — and start to plan and rebuild our urban landscape from scratch.

We do not want refugee camps. Instead, we should locate seven sites near water supplies, which will be transformed into model, well-planned cities. These seven cities would initially be laid out with temporary tents for the evacuees, but on the promise that these are converted, over time, into bricks and mortar. Unlike refugee camps, this gives people the stability they need to become independent, and is a programme that worked in New Orleans after the floods. The next step is to cultivate Haiti as a manufacturing base for America, becoming a cost-effective alternative to China, as we once were.

I am pushing hard on this plan – I am due to present it to the Black Caucus of the United States Congress. It is my vision of Haiti’s future. I look forward to seeing you there.

In this New Millennium, after 2000 years of Roman-style corruption and warmaking, the social crime of acquiescence, of collaborating with madmen and murderers-- witnessed daily around the world-- seems to be the "business of the day" while billions of innocent, unrepresented humans wither away beneath the war machinery.

As much as I love President Obama and Hillary Clinton, as hard as we fought to "Change" the system of 2 centuries in less than a year, as high as our hopes may have drifted like the elusive "balloon boy"-- the harsh reality of our daily struggle is that warlords and profiteers, the Bush criminals and bullying Republicans are still controlling the conversation, stalemating the Senate and using Karl Rove, of all ungodly trolls, to poison the public dialogue.

This is nothing new-- we've endured it, those of us who've survived the Bush regimes, the Reagan war machinery, the CIA global "destabilization & assassination" campaigns, which now appear to be promoted as "U.S. foreign policy." Look- Blackwater (Xe) and Halliburton are still raking in the big contracts, the war machine keeps churning out mass-extermination weaponry, now even producing "non-lethal" directed energy against US, the "insurgent crowds," using our own taxes to develop weapons against us. This is truly unforgiveable, high and mighty elected officials. With each day you are losing ground by caving in to it, losing millions of history-making allies in the process.

So we will serve notice in this new year of consequence, 2010, as we enter a wired culture of futuristic transformation. Either get REAL about war crimes, the criminal activity which has bankrupted the world and allowed corruption to flourish from Italy to Israel, Iran to Vietnam and China-- all because you can't acknowledge what the forensics experts all know is true: we've been hijacked! The internet is an unforgiving oracle and perhaps the ultimate global tribunal, as well as an Amazonian library-- which has documented down to tiny details how the "National Security" state was born from the Nazi ashes into the CIA, MI5, KGB-- the alleged "intelligence" agencies deployed to seek out "enemies" and foment "covert wars" around the world.

How these covert wars killed millions of innocent people, created "terror" tactics unimagined by sane human beings, tortured, conspired, covered-up the assassination of our very own President by the Texas mob, which later empowered the Bush mob. Now you are actively participating in the direct denial of the evidence glaring like thermate in the sun-- that the 9-11 attacks and controlled demolitions were carried out, coordinated and planned by "black ops" agencies related to Dick Cheney, Blackwater and the CIA, then used to justify the suspension of the U.S. Constitution, the launching of a permanent "war on terror" and the ultimate "mindfuck" of the American population.

Again, none of this is new, simply Reaganite Republican "state craft." The gigantic wrench of "terror war" was the tool that Hitler and his fascists adopted from the Romans to seize most of Europe, under a cloud of death and planned destruction. Julius Caesar conquered my ancestors, the Celts, this exact way: create enemies, real or contrived, to justify "security forces" and occupation of territories containing "insurgents" or resources, then make up any manner of bullshit to cover your trail. Then declare yourself a hero, for making the "Pax Americana."

We remind you that the "United States of America," along with Canada, Australia and Israel are all CONTRIVED states, not inherited ancestral homelands. The territories we occupy are European COLONIES, forged by blood and genocide on the homelands of the native peoples who occupied these lands for thousands of years before the "founders' showed up with guns. Consider for example what would happen to the U.S.A. if the U.S. dollar completely collapsed. No more George washington, no more "national culture"-- back to the community, the land, the common folk and native cultures.

Here is the raw argument, the rub which now places you Democrats in the same camp as U.S. Republicans in covering-up of war criminals and embezzlement, monopolization and profiteering on an unprecedented scale: by going along with these "counter-intelligence" tactics and disinformation schemes you are forcing every activist in the world to carry the load for you, to work and expose themselves to attack, to be rounded up and executed, or simply "disappeared." What are you going to say to China, to Iran, to Vietnam, when they are carrying out KGB and CIA tactics? You can't say anything because you are still allowing these "security" agencies to run the show.

50 years of former CIA officials, even General and President Eisenhower himself have warned that this overthrow of the representative government would lead to orwellian consequences. Now here we are, bending over to allow our orifices and body fluids to be probed, expected to believe manufactured events involving incinerating people with robots, being charged billions upon trillions for a decade of criminal theft and black budgeting. So we ask you, here at 2010-- where does it end? Do we continue to "war" against our own eveil shadows until we're all starving in a burned-out wasteland, surrounded by insane, robotic drones?

Show us one "expert analyst" or other CIA spokesperson who can claim that their "intelligence" activities have succeeded in making our world more safe, more sane, more peaceful or intelligent. The situation we are trapped in is exactly the opposite-- we are in dire peril and propagandized to the point of insanity, in large part due to the CIA "covert" activities around the world. From corporate-financed guerrilla wars to assassinations, drug smuggling and terror tactics beyond description (see our Stockwell video)-- the CIA has poisoned and endangered all of us. Now it has attacked us directly (9-11) and hijacked our entire country, along with our economy, our ethics and any shred of international respect. The CIA should be regarded as a criminal organization which has actively subverted our constitutional government (also known as "treason") on behalf of power-hungry presidents and ruthless corporations. The millions of victims are almost entirely poor, defensless and unrepresented people in "underdeveloped" areas of the world.

The Obama promise of Change can't be snuffed out like Rush Limbaugh's drug habit, like Paul Wellstone's plane. We are going to bring the TRUTH out in the open, with you or without you. Right now you have the unique and historic opportunity to bring the entire U.S. Republican party up on conspiracy charges, to answer the demands of millions of Americans to put Dick Cheney and his crew before a war crimes tribunal, to allow the 9-11 evidence, and yes the WTC Building 7 explanations, out into the light of day.

This half century of Bush family crimes have been documented in detail-- simply search Amazon for hundreds of books and films on the subject, collectively equivalent to a global expert witness library. You Democrats are making a strategic blunder by taking the easy path. Health care is important, yes-- but war crimes which continue to threaten all of us are more pressing. It's like you're trying to cure our CIA cancer by pretending a trip to Disneyland will fix the problem. Meanwhile, the desperate and unrepresented are willing to blow themselves up to get your attention.

We suggest you also take gigantic, bold steps which can be summed up "OMG" & "WTF"-- like legalizing cannabis, marijuana and HEMP, once America's signature crop. Again, how long will this Hearst-Rockefeller "Reefer madness" bullshit continue to play as "legal business," when the war on marijuana is an obvious violation of both human and natural rights? You come to my house and tell my kids that flowers are illegal, and that growing herbs is "manufacturing a dangerous drug"? That is the real madness, Mr. Chucklehead Darecopper.

By legalizing and ending the FAILED prohibition you will at once: release people being held by the state as political prisoners for victimless herbal crimes, redirect the law enforcement and surveillance agencies to actual criminal activities which have victims, in the process saving billions of cumulative credits. You will also allow for real, practical "health care" of terminal patients, veterans, queens on their moontime, migraine sufferers-- by an herb which was recognized in America as a medicine for 200 years, in India, for 3000 years! Also, it is a clear sign that the decades of lies and "covert war" against the American people is stopping. We must stop it.

Now we're not saying you have "sold out," not quite yet. But you have really dropped alot of balls, have allowed the criminals who in the past decade have bankrupted our country, embroiled us in global wars and cultural clashes, got away with their buddies and offshore accounts in the war profiteering, petrochemical and vaccine making industries with trillions in skimmed of monopolizations. You've allowed them so far to waltz away as if nothing was wrong with the picture. Perhaps because many of your own party, like our old Senator Dan Inouye, are implicated in the promotion of the war machinery, at the expense of liberty and justice.

It's like the schoolyard bully situation. They will keep picking a fight, attacking you for every little petty reason, even if it's contrived, so they control the schollyard, keep you in a corner. At some point you've gotta either organize your friends and allies to kick the bully's ass, or get on your brass knuckles and biker gear to do it yourself. We are so very sick of the Rove-Rush-Dick Armey attack bullshit we keep being fed, we are being forced to your defense daily. But we have our limits, many have already stopped paying attention.

"Public endangerment" and "impersonating a public official" can summarize the situation we, the public citizens, are faced with, not to mention your cancerous, "ponzi-scheming," war profiteering corporations. As well, you are faced with national elections in 2010, so it's time you really step up your game, folks. At this juncture of the first year of the Obama presidency, you seem to be allowing the fascists, the hate-mongers, the "Red Teams" of the militarists, and the war profiteers to position themselves to take the country over once again. Truly, the possibility and projection of the security state under another corrupted CIA regime is a nightmare beyond Orwellian imaginings.

Finally, we recommend you immediately create an office of New Media, to coordinate the new democratic technologies and information dispersal potential of the new wired America. First task-- freeing up the evidence, the historic events of a century of industrial war, the documented deaths of millions of innocent victims of the "resource wars," which coontinue to this day in Iraq and Afghanistan. Experts abound, academics are at your disposal, the internet is your oyster. oh, and promote Amber Ettinger, for you would not control the White House without her, great and powerful Obama! The classic medical text on PPs is The Mask of Sanity by Dr. Hervey Cleckley. Read it! PPs are presentable, they know full well the suffering their actions may cause others, but they do not care. They cannot care because they are nuts. They have a screw loose!

And what syndrome better describes so many executives at Enron and WorldCom and on and on, who have enriched themselves while ruining their employees and investors and country, and who still feel as pure as the driven snow, no matter what anybody may say to or about them? And so many of these heartless PPs now hold big jobs in our federal government, as though they were leaders instead of sick.

What has allowed so many PPs to rise so high in corporations, and now in government, is that they are so decisive. Unlike normal people, they are never filled with doubts, for the simple reason that they cannot care what happens next. Simply can't. Do this! Do that! Mobilize the reserves! Privatize the public schools! Attack Iraq! Cut health care! Tap everybody's telephone! Cut taxes on the rich! Build a trillion-dollar missile shield! Fuck habeas corpus and the Sierra Club and In These Times, and kiss my ass!"

In 1996, the United States (US) Army Military Police (MP) Corps restructured its four combat
support (CS) missions into the following five CS functions. These functions adequately describe
MP capabilities in support of US forces deployed worldwide.
• Maneuver and mobility support.
• Areasecurity.
• Law and order (L&O).
• Internment/resettlement (I/R).
• Police intelligence operations.
Field Manual (FM) 3-19.40 depicts the doctrinal foundation, principles, and processes that MP
will employ when dealing with enemy prisoners of war (EPWs), civilian internees (CIs), US
military prisoner operations, and MP support to civil-military operations (populace and resource
control [PRC], humanitarian assistance [HA], and emergency services [ES]). FM 3-19.40 is not a
standalone manual, and it must be used in combination with other publications. These
publications are pointed out throughout the manual, and a consolidated list is provided in the
bibliography.
This manual provides guidance that can be used by US Army service schools, students, sister
services, and federal agencies. It is fully compatible with current joint, multinational, and
interagency doctrine.

NONLETHAL WEAPONS
B-10. The DOD defines NLWs as weapons that are explicitly designed and
primarily employed to incapacitate personnel or material, while minimizing
fatalities, permanent injury to personnel, and undesired damage to property
and the environment. Unlike conventional weapons that destroy their targets
through blast, penetration, and fragmentation, NLWs employ other means to
prevent the target from functioning.
B-11. The NLW doctrine and concepts of operation are designed to reinforce
deterrence and expand the range of options available to commanders. They
enhance the capability of US forces to accomplish the following objectives:
• Discourage, delay, and prevent hostile actions.
• Limit escalation.
• Take military action in situations where the use of lethal force is not
the preferred option.
• Protect US forces.
• Disable equipment, facilities, and personnel.
B-12. The zero probability of producing fatalities or permanent injuries is not
a requirement of NLWs. Complete avoidance of these effects is not guaranteed
or expected; however, NLWs significantly reduce them as compared to lethal
weapons. When drafting the ROE, clearly articulate that using NLWs is an
additional means of employing force for the particular purpose of limiting the
probability of death or serious injury to noncombatants or belligerents.
However, the use of deadly force is an inherent right of individuals when they,
their fellow soldiers, or personnel in their charge are threatened with death or
serious bodily harm. The use of NLWs adds flexibility when controlling
disturbances in an I/R facility by providing an environment where guard
forces can permissively engage threatening targets with limited risk of
noncombatant casualties and collateral damage (see FM 90-40). Table B-1,
page B-4, shows lethal, nonlethal, and ineffective zones of NLWs.

B-13. The use of lethal force under the standing ROE is never denied. Never
deploy forces without giving them the ability to defend themselves against a
lethal threat. Ensure that they are trained, armed, and equipped for combat.
Nonlethal force is a complement to, not a replacement for, lethal force. Expand
a proactive response across the range of military operations. Delegate the
decision to use NLWs against an adversary during a confrontation to the
lowest possible level, preferably to the platoon or the squad. Ensure that all
personnel, not just leaders, have a clear understanding of the ROE and the
commander’s intent (see FM 90-40).
B-14. Facility commanders consider the use-of-force options discussed in this
appendix and AR 190-14 when dealing with disruptions. They substitute
nonlethal devices for firearms when they are adequate for MP to safely
perform their duties. Currently, MP have the following nonlethal options
available for crowd control:
• Riot control agents.
n O-chlorobenzylidine malonitrile (CS).
n Oleoresin capsicum (OC).
• MWDs.
• MP clubs.
• Riot batons.
B-15. Commanders and public affairs officers are prepared to address media
questions and concerns regarding the use and role of NLWs. They make it
clear that the presence of NLWs in no way indicates abandoning the option to
employ deadly force in appropriate circumstances.

Let's take a look at Halliburton for a moment.

1) $292 million in taxpayer money will go to Halliburton to pay for goods & services it will provide to Tyumen Oil Co., and company controlled by the Aplfa Group, which has ties to the Russian Mob.

2) Halliburton continues to do business with Burma despite that government's ruthless repression of its own citizens. Security gurards hired by Burmese companies involved with Halliburton have been accused of rape and torture of local villagers opposed to the project. Halliburton has fought all attempts to bring sanctions against Burma for its conduct.

3) Halliburton has done business with Libya, Iran, and Iraq in contravention of the law. It has repeatedly lobbied to have sanctions against these countries removed.

4) Halliburton has apparently cooked the books to the tune of $100 million.

5) Between 1995 & 1999 Halliburton created 44 shell companies in the Caymans to evade US Taxes, cheating the American people out of $302 million. While it was doing this, it also had its snout in the public trough, scarfing down $2.3 billion in government contracts, and $1.5 billion in loan gurantees.

6) Halliburton was fined $2 million for overcharging the Pentagon.

So, what kind of person works at Halliburton? Since I'm Irish, let me answer a question with a question. Who, but a criminal, would work for Halliburton?

Donald Rumsfeld: The War Crimes Case

As the Democrats took control of the House of Representatives and were on the verge of taking over the Senate, George W. Bush announced Wednesday that Donald Rumsfeld was out and Robert Gates was in as Secretary of Defense. When Bush is being run out of town, he knows how to get out in the front of the crowd and make it look like he's leading the parade. The Rumsfeld-Gates swap is a classic example.

The election was a referendum on the war. The dramatic results prove that the overwhelming majority of people in this country don't like the disaster Bush has created in Iraq. So rather than let the airwaves fill up with beaming Democrats and talk of the horrors of Iraq, Bush changed the subject and fired Rumsfeld. Now, when the Democrats begin to investigate what went wrong, Rumsfeld will no longer be the controversial public face of the war.

Rumsfeld had come under fire from many quarters, not the least of which was a gaggle of military officers who had been clamoring for his resignation. Bush said he decided to oust Rumsfeld before Tuesday's voting but lied to reporters so it wouldn't affect the election. Putting aside the incredulity of that claim, Bush likely waited to see if there would be a changing of the legislative guard before giving Rumsfeld his walking papers. If the GOP had retained control of Congress, Bush would probably have retained Rumsfeld. But in hindsight, Bush has to wish he had ejected Rumsfeld before the election to demonstrate a new direction in the Iraq war to angry voters.

Rumsfeld's sin was not in failing to develop a winning strategy for Iraq. There is no winning in Iraq, because we never belonged there in the first place. The war in Iraq is a war of aggression. It violates the United Nations Charter which only permits one country to invade another in self-defense or with the blessing of the Security Council.

Donald Rumsfeld was one of the primary architects of the Iraq war. On September 15, 2001, in a meeting at Camp David, Rumsfeld suggested an attack on Iraq because he was deeply worried about the availability of "good targets in Afghanistan." Former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill reported that Rumsfeld articulated his hope to "dissuade" other nations from "asymmetrical challenges" to U.S. power. Rumsfeld's support for a preemptive attack on Iraq "matched with plans for how the world's second largest oil reserve might be divided among the world's contractors made for an irresistible combination," Ron Suskind wrote after interviewing O'Neill.

Rumsfeld defensively sought to decouple oil access from regime change in Iraq when he appeared on CBS News on November 15, 2002. In a Hamlet moment, Rumsfeld proclaimed the United States' beef with Iraq has "nothing to do with oil, literally nothing to do with oil." The Secretary doth protest too much.

Prosecuting a war of aggression isn't Rumsfeld's only crime. He also participated in the highest levels of decision-making that allowed the extrajudicial execution of several people. Willful killing is a grave breach of the Geneva Conventions, which constitutes a war crime. In his book, Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib, Seymour Hersh described the "unacknowledged" special-access program (SAP) established by a top-secret order Bush signed in late 2001 or early 2002. It authorized the Defense Department to set up a clandestine team of Special Forces operatives to defy international law and snatch, or assassinate, anyone considered a "high-value" Al Qaeda operative, anywhere in the world. Rumsfeld expanded SAP into Iraq in August 2003.

But Rumsfeld's crimes don't end there. He sanctioned the use of torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, which are grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions, and thus constitute war crimes. Rumsfeld approved interrogation techniques that included the use of dogs, removal of clothing, hooding, stress positions, isolation for up to 30 days, 20-hour interrogations, and deprivation of light and auditory stimuli. According to Seymour Hersh, Rumsfeld sanctioned the use of physical coercion and sexual humiliation to extract information from prisoners. Rumsfeld also authorized waterboarding, where the interrogator induces the sensation of imminent death by drowning. Waterboarding is widely considered a form of torture.

Rumsfeld was intimately involved with the interrogation of a Saudi detainee, Mohamed al-Qahtani, at Guantánamo in late 2002. General Geoffrey Miller, who later transferred many of his harsh interrogation techniques to Abu Ghaib, supervised the interrogation and gave Rumsfeld weekly updates on his progress. During a six-week period, al-Qahtani was stripped naked, forced to wear women's underwear on his head, denied bathroom access, threatened with dogs, forced to perform tricks while tethered to a dog leash, and subjected to sleep deprivation. Al-Qahtani was kept in solitary confinement for 160 days. For 48 days out of 54, he was interrogated for 18 to 20 hours a day.

Even though Rumsfeld didn't personally carry out the torture and mistreatment of prisoners, he authorized it. Under the doctrine of command responsibility, a commander can be liable for war crimes committed by his inferiors if he knew or should have known they would be committed and did nothing to stop of prevent them. The U.S. War Crimes Act provides for prosecution of a person who commits war crimes and prescribes life imprisonment, or even the death penalty if the victim dies.

Although intending to signal a new direction in Iraq with his nomination of Gates to replace Rumsfeld, Bush has no intention of leaving Iraq. He is building huge permanent U.S. military bases there. Gates at the helm of the Defense Department, Bush said, "can help make the necessary adjustments in our approach." Bush hopes he can bring congressional Democrats on board by convincing them he will simply fight a smarter war.

But this war can never get smarter. Nearly 3,000 American soldiers and more than 650,000 Iraqi civilians have died and tens of thousands have been wounded. Our national debt has skyrocketed with the billions Bush has pumped into the war. Now that there is a new day in Congress, there must be a new push to end the war. That means a demand that Congress cut off its funds.

And the war criminals must be brought to justice - beginning with Donald Rumsfeld. On November 14, the Center for Constitutional Rights, the National Lawyers Guild, and other organizations will ask the German federal prosecutor to initiate a criminal investigation into the war crimes of Rumsfeld and other Bush administration officials. Although Bush has immunized his team from prosecution in the International Criminal Court, they could be tried in any country under the well-established principle of universal jurisdiction.

Donald Rumsfeld may be out of sight, but he will not be out of mind. The chickens have come home to roost.

ADVANTAGES
B-16. The NLWs provide the flexibility to favorably influence a situation with
reduced risk of noncombatant fatalities and collateral damage. They are more
humane, which is consistent with the political and social intent of
humanitarian and peacekeeping missions. The force that properly employs
NLWs gains an advantage over forces who rely on lethal options alone because
the degree of provocation required to employ these options is substantially
less. This advantage provides a proactive posture and a quicker response. It
also diminishes the likelihood of a situation escalating to a point where deadly
force is required.
B-17. The NLWs are less likely to provoke others; however, they may provoke
a negative response. Demonstrated restraint greatly diminishes feelings of
anger and remorse when deadly force is required after nonlethal options fail.
The NLWs facilitate postincident stabilization by reducing internee alienation
and collateral damage.
TRAINING
B-18. Soldiers and leaders are trained in the correct employment of NLWs.
They understand the limited use of these systems in environments with
restrictive ROE. Their training is continuous at all levels so that they
understand when and how to effectively and properly employ NLWs. The
incorrect application of NLWs can have significant operational and political
ramifications. Well-trained MP leaders who provide timely, clear guidance to
soldiers ensure mission accomplishment.
B-19. Many NLWs have maximum-effective and minimum-safety ranges.
Individuals struck short of the minimum safety range often suffer severe
injuries or death, while the effects of most nonlethal devices are greatly
mitigated at longer ranges. Engage the threat within the nonlethal zone,
which is beyond the lethal zone and short of the ineffective zone (see Table
B-1).
B-20. When training with and planning for the use of NLWs—
• Never apply them in situations where deadly force is appropriate.
• Never apply them in situations that will place troops in undue danger.
• Always cover them with deadly force.
TACTICS
B-21. Establish riot control teams that have a minimum response time. Due
to the physical nature of riot control, individuals in riot control formations do
not carry long rifles. Lethal attachments follow closely behind riot control
formations to provide lethal coverage for the entire formation.
B-22. During a nonlethal engagement, a designated marksman supplies
lethal overwatch to provide confidence and safety to those facing a riot. The
marksman is in an overwatch position and armed with a standard infantry
rifle, mounted with a high-powered scope. If a lethal threat is presented, he
can scan the crowd to identify agitators and riot leaders for apprehension. He
can also fire lethal rounds if warranted. Designated marksmen are ideally
suited for flank security and countersniper operations.

Stepping outside of the pale and pacified "New Patriot" police-state of the New World Order (aka "America")-- once you make it through the razor wire-- it is quite clear that what is going on is a gargantuan, Machiavellian MUGGING. The most bold robbery ever to be pulled off in human history-- in the grand and ruthless style of the Roman Empire-- to secure not just the last black-gold fields on Earth, but the future credit, the lifeblood, the "freedom" and the " truth" we humans have taken for granted.

The United Corporations of America have been maneuvering for the past century toward this ideal "Free Market" world of total access, secured by the most powerful (and expensive!) fleets of killing machines ever assembled-- making sure all the creamy, toxic profits flow into their banks. The conglomerating corporate powers have absorbed all in their reach-- the media, the food, the energy, the entertainment, the real estate, and of course their large arsenal of drugs, which we pay through the noses of our children for.

Another way to look at this postmodern corporate-state is as a "Syndicate"... a very lucrative and cutthroat assembly of co-conspirators willing to extort, bribe, hustle, lie, cheat, sue, raid, and pillage anyone or anything which may give them more "leverage." The operation of the entire "Reagan Revolution" from the beginning has been classic "protection"-- the oldest racket next to pimping-- and any cursory examination of the Bush family (and their corporate-CIA buddies) reveals scandal upon scandal, somehow magically coated with Teflon. From the criminal manipulation of the election in Florida by the Bush brothers and their cohorts, to the brutal attack on New York City and the subsequent cover-up, to their diversion toward Afghanistan as they deployed the "Patriot Act" and "Homeland Security" police-state, to the outright illegal invasion of Iraq in order to murder its leaders and rob the entire region of oil, this Bush Regime has looked more like an organized criminal inasion than any kind of legitimate political movement.

Sadly, the only reason these neo-fascist criminals have gotten this far is through the corporate monopolization and manipulation of the American media. I mean, does anyone out there really take their "approval ratings" seriously anymore? How obviously slanted and innappropriate--everyone else is jumping of a cliff, why don't you? The media keep trying to convince us that "America" is a huge WonderBread melting pot when in reality the colonial empire is sprawled out over a vast expanse of the planet, as diverse as diverse can be-- that is the beauty and treasure of the American Dream. The New Patriot-Republican agenda is to jam their militarized cowboy-KKK mindset into all of our holes so we can no longer argue or discourse, or even think straight. The perfect "protection racket."

When these highly secretive and paranoid people in power, with their fingers on their nuclear buttons, decree that we will soon have the largest deficits in history, what they are really trying to get us to swallow is the sickening load of their military budget-- in mob terms, they will twist our arms and our children's arms to pay them to build bigger weapons to keep us all in line. These Bush executives, if you peel back their Skull and Bones badges, are heavily invested in the three most profitable (and corrupted) industries in the world: pharmaceuticals, weapons, and oil.

The oil racket is so obvious it should need little explanation. Iraq has the last great reservoir on the planet-- and who is inventorying what is being drained right now by CEO/VP Cheney's Brown&Root? The U.S. military, oh wait-- they work for Cheney too! Don't want to confuse anything in the accounting by having U.N. people snooping around! Keep those nosy inspectors at bay! The Bushites knew where all the weapons were anyhow-- our CIA sold them to Saddam (remember-Rumsfeld arranged it)!

Pharmaceuticals are a bit more complex of a racket-- much like drug dealing everywhere. "Create a demand, supply the need." Did you know that while Bush Sr.'s CIA was channeling vast quantities of cocaine into the urban areas of the U.S., the Bush family also was profiting from their interest in Eli Lilly's cocaine treatment drugs? Any coincidence that now that Afghanistan is "liberated" the opium triangle is back in business like never before? Gee, I wonder where all that fresh heroin will end up? Follow the cancer trail, the AIDS deployment, the SARS epidemic-- a brutal "protection racket" verging on the demonic.

Now, Eisenhower tried to warn us all about the "unwarranted influence of the military-industrial complex" but did we listen? We are now in the midst of a worst-case scenario of military corporate influence out of control, resulting in the "Bring It On" mafioso machismo of an idiot. This Bush mob and their minions are ruthlessly willing to throw our sons and daughters to the wolves, to rake in greater profits and power, all the while surrounding our neighborhoods with barbed wire and microwave towers. The empire is turning on us, as empires tend to do when they get top-heavy. The scum has risen to the top of the melting pot, and now these corporate criminals are attempting to steal even our minds with their murderous programming and "approval" scams.

From a wild-eyed child in the back row comes a revolutionary suggestion:
Why don't we pass legislation to prevent corporate executives from holding offices of military power-- especially those in the energy and weapons industries? That would disqualify just about everyone in Bush's cabinet-- including the lovely Condy Rice (no worries, she'll still have that Texaco tanker named after her)! In fact, the only man left standing on the Republican side would be Colin Powell. And we don't get the feeling lately he approves of playing Tom to Bubba Bush's Kowboy Klique anyway. He would probably be as relieved as Dwight Eisenhower to see Bush, Cheney and all the other murderous mobsters behind bars where they belong, and our troops coming home.

What it has boiled down to, boys and girls, in this new-millenium "Planetary Survival" challenge is the United Corporations of America and their massive military versus the United Nations ideals and processes. Test this on your neighbors: which side do you stand on: the unilateralist "Terminator" Bush or the United Nations peacekeeping process? At this point, either way we'll likely be paying for Bush's blood-soaked "embezzlement" for a very long time...if we make it through the killing fields.

This is a "worst case scenario" in our eyes, and all options rest upon your intervention.

From above, your solutions appear so simple, your potential as a "Paradise" so delicious, your flowers, herbs and beautiful Goddesses so fertile. Realize that if "War" and criminal elites had not been busy enslaving and bankrupting you, killing by the millions, programming you to kill on their command-- your planet would be "Paradise." While Americans may feel congratulatory over President Obama's ascension and symbolically breaking the chains of slavery, we should also pause to regard Dr. King's legacy of dreaming an end to war. He, Jesus and Abraham are all HORRIFIED, mourning the loss of humanity and allowance of industrial warfare in the recent months. Nations who "rule" the industrialized planet have been deploying mass-incineration and toxic weapons to the farthest corners, killing thousands upon thousands as if exterminating animals in a global killing factory. Like they still slaughter wolves in Alaska from helicopters. Only now we're killing humans with roving robot killer drones bearing building-incinerating bombs. Whole villages explode like popcorn, on our satellite screens.

Now Israel's far-right regime is incinerating UN schools, claiming "self-defense," using phosphorus to melt houses filled with defenseless women and children, refugees huddling in the Gaza ghettos. What happened to "Never Forget?" The shame, the horror is beyond words. And Hamas thugs hand out Euros while launching rockets indiscriminately, grinning that old demon excitement of vengeance, brutally beating anyone who disagrees with their terror campaigns. Whose wargod does this serve? The Devil just chuckles at the stage the Bushes have set for "Armaggedon," on behalf of their fascist forefathers. Oh, the Spectacle.

In Tibet, the Chinese "Red Army" occupation continues its demonically brutal campaign of beating, torturing and killing monks and nuns, after having burned most of that ancient kingdom's temples and driving the Dalai Lama into exile. What would the West do if Russia invaded Rome, bulldozed the Vatican and forced the Pope to flee for his life to Ireland? Anyone remaining will be thrown into prison simply for having a picture of the Pope?

Meanwhile, the majority of Americans celebrate President Obama's "hapa" upbringing in Hawai'i, almost completely oblivious to the fact that the Hawaiian archipelago is a brutally repressed kingdom as well, with the indigenous culture and government having been outlawed, the last Queen imprisoned, and the commonwealth land seized. Over the past century it has been used as a Pacific military "stomping ground," with many sacred areas like Mauna Kea still being regularly bombed, bulldozed and burned, littered with toxic "testing." The US Navy insists on blasting high-powered electromagnetic beams across the ocean, for some nefarious war against King Neptune no doubt, knowing they will be injuring the cetacean nations, innocent sentient creatures more ancient and intelligent than we can imagine. Now at what point did "God bless" this mess, America?

We Must Now End War, or War Will End Us All

The smell of napalm, the busy hum of Power making us "safe," the pulse of paranoia and pride... it's a demonic smorgasbord. Wherever women are beaten down and treated like animals, where boys are forced to slaughter other humans for a cause, where criminal profiteers build and sell more efficient killing devices-- there the demons are dancing. When the hater spits out at their subject, they soil their own soul, often ending as suicidal, obsessive psychopaths. Yet many of our countries are being ruled by these militarized, demonically-powered madmen.

We must share the simple solutions, oh woeful monkeyshiners, "mankind" of the Holy Bomb. How one gets rid of demons? Look at them as they TRULY are! Once you SEE through their multiple layers of lies and illusion, deception, delusion, the ugly old beasties run away-- Or kill you, as they have caused millions upon millions of murders. Once you do survive the "exorcism" purge, escape possession and subservience, then you can reclaim your TRUE nature. You will now see the beauty of the world that was obscured. Love. Hope. Magic. LIFE.

We've all been suffering the swarms of demons of industrialized War for a century now, embroiled and indebted to mechanical killing on a grand scale, coerced into countless millions of fellow humans being tortured, burned, maimed in hellish ways for decades on end. Large swaths of the Earth have been turned to toxic wastelands to feed the wargods. Now we drown in their fallout, living daily with radiation in our bones and the threat of mass-incineration.

Another favorite devil delight, as all of our mythologies attest, is masquerading as gods or angels. Some claim to be "fallen angels" or satans. Others, "almighty father" or "lord this or that," prophet or commander, royal kings who rule by fear. Myriad ways of manipulation of the mind have made generations of men serve their avaricious and barbaric appetites for killing, in a wide array of religious movements and "holy wars" (a demon joke).

Often men's souls are subsumed to a ghostly degree in the "business of killing" as a solution. Whole cultures of people have disappeared beneath this poisonous tide. In our lifetimes, millions of innocents have been slaughtered or starved on this sacrificial shrine called "power is righteous." Murder is justified, even by the State which "trusts in God."

In the great "inquisitions" which forged this wargod culture, whole villages of women chose to walk into the ocean together rather than be raped and burned as "witches." With each breath we choose our God, our Mother. With every step we decide how we live or die.

Get the cancerous, corrupted machine-men and their ancient demons completely out of the building. Turn the diplomacy and conflict over to the mothers and children, and the world will be reborn anew in truth and beauty. Ozma, the glowing orb of Gaia, demands this transformation. Palin, bellicose smear propaganda smothering any rationality.

Let's turn to our American Heritage dictionary to reference that fear-trigger word "socialize" which the Reaganites continue to hound after. "Socialize: 1) To put under public ownership or control 2) To convert or adapt to social needs 3) To take part on social activities." When you talk about "getting the job done," it never refers to adapting to social needs, even at this time of crisis? Of course not-- you want to FORCE a demand for social needs, that's where the profits lie. Because what you century-old Establishment represents is the most dangerous, murderous and deceptive instition of "militarism" in human history.

"Militarism: 1) Glorification of the ideals of the professional military class 2) Predominance of the armed forces in state policies." You, my beguiling countrymen, are the purveyors of the Bush-branded, Texas-sized, atomic-tipped "totalitarianism" aka "National Security State."

Also, you are promoters of the professional, criminal contracting/profiteering/pirating class represented by Mr. Dick Halliburton, I mean Cheney. And you continue to grind your distorted, bloated and rotten old blarney into our faces as if you hadn't just handed us a burning pirate ship.

Only this pirate ship is brand-new, with a long-term lease hung around our grandchildren's necks, weighed down by several fleets of nuclear submarines. The name on the 'Nimitz-class' aircraft carrier is, of course, "Bush." What's that? You demand we must order a NEW fleet of 'Ford-class' carriers at $100 Billion each? So they can be armed with your "upgraded" FCS: "Future Combat Systems"; total space dominance "Computerized Cavalry" armed with satellite robo-drones even more deadly than the Predator? That's another $160 Billion, not counting the R&D and technical personnel.

This Transformers-like, Strangelovian scenario we are being conned into over several generations makes NO sense at all-- in fact appears to be an outbreak of mass insanity, on an industrial scale.

Take for example, CIA veteran, new U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates' recent testimony: "The U.S. Navy's battlefleet is still larger than the next 13 navies combined. And 11 of those 13 navies are U.S. allies or partners." And he's just referring to one branch of the vast, profoundly costly and toxic U.S. "War Machine."

We challenge any American militarist, politician, or pundit to give even a brief inventory of the U.S. military in all of its deployment. I will cut to the chase for you-- you can't, because a great deal of it is completely "classified"-- meaning the most aggregious example of government gone to despotism, "taxation without representation." Especially the U.S. Space Command, which is engulfing all of the other forces and NASA. The cost of these vast societies of the "military class" and secret sciences are bankrupting our entire world, largely using "black budget" money launderers like "AIG" and other Bush/CIA allies. The Bushes have been in it since Prescott stepped up to the international "financing" business, from Nazi gold to cocaine, arms and oil, secret accounts and truckloads of cash "disappearing" in Iraq-- TRILLIONS have gone down that sinkhole, with absolutely no accountability to any American representative. So what do you have to say about that, Senator McCain?

And during that period I spent most of my time being a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer for capitalism... A "swell racket" which has mutated into a killing culture which has colonized the entire planet, our entertainment, our schoolrooms and our daily dialogue. They hide behind this wall of obscuration and obfuscation, or "cover fire" as they think of it, laid down by these attacking media hounds. We've noticed over the past year it doesn't even matter if the attacks have any truth or sanity to them, as long as the public attention is "wrenched" to their advantage. Can any American tell me what actually happened during the last Bush year at the White House/White Ranch? Or where the HELL Dick Cheney was during the last 8 years? Basically, our country was stolen away from us in Florida in 2000 and run by a criminal family and their "Enterprise/Neo-Con" cabal for the benefit of military contractors and oil companies. Who can even begin to calculate the history-breaking profiteering "racket" of the petroleum corporations and royals during the past year? People, that's where much of your "economy" has drained away to!

The most obvious and disturbing conclusion we have come to, to put a radioactive cherry on this slice of face-pie, my militarist monkeyfriends is: The "National Security State" has completely FAILED at both security and sanity. This includes the capitalist, communist and socialist nations, but most extremely in the United States, Russia and China. Whatever "great expectations" the founders of these militaries had for their role in society, all have become the monsters in every closet, the poison infecting our lungs, the lies which are bankrupting us all-- allowing murder on vast scales to continue to expand its influence.

Can anyone argue we have been made any increment of "more secure" with our expanded "Homeland Security" or F-Troop like occupations under Bush? Exactly the opposite-- the CIA/NSA/Pentagon culture has dragged our entire world into a science fiction scenario where we daily must confront our own possible extinction, on top of the death and maiming of our neighbors, brothers, cousins-- for what? While insanity boils to the top of denial and deception.

So what is REALLY going on here? Who are the militarists arming themselves against-- their own people? ALIENS? Is it all some vast esoteric war game being carried out by the ruling elite? The militarist mouthpieces in the media keep attacking the "stimulus" and recovery packages being given to the states as "pork." They love those one-word slogans like "pork" and "surge." You should probably not use those two terms together, however.

The State of Hawaii is getting around $2 Billion to possibly save some of our schools which are closing or bridges which are collapsing. $2 Billion sounds like alot of cash, until you start comparing it to the amount of "pork" being perpetrated by the military out here. That's about the same amount the Army is going to spend to expand their "Stryker" (mobile military police) brigade facilities here-- to essentially "practice" 4-wheeling on bulldozed sacred land and blow more crap up. Oh yeah, and prepare to occupy more cities in crisis-- at home or abroad?

Another price check: during his reign, Bush 43 ordered 183 F-22 fighter jets at $350 Million each-- about what our state spends on education-- ONE jet! $2 Billion is like SIX jets, out of 183! And get this-- the militarist class is already hounding Obama to buy MORE! Please, Mr. Congressman, can you explain to my class what the socially redeeming qualities of a F-22 fighter jet is? JOBS? That's where we've been herded to-- job opportunities to incinerate the enemy at 200 mph? Or with ONE Trident submarine, incinerate an entire country, and probably mutate all life on the planet? Seriously, WHAT exactly is going on here? I mean besides "Racketeering: 1) Fraudulent or dishonest business or practice 2) Engaging in extortion or other illegal business activities."

One final assignment for the kids, regarding the language lesson contained herein. Consider the probability that language actually CREATES your reality, your culture, your beliefs, your experience and thought. Therefore, by expanding your language, vocabulary and symbolic examination of the world, is like the unfolding of more and more maps of reality. Unfortunately, the past "industrial-scientific" century has shredded and burned most of the ancient maps available in the culture, or secured them away; made them illegal in the case of psychedelic plants, the most ancient "shamanic internet." Not that I'm recommending psychedelics-- just asking you to "take back your mind!" Take back your dreams. Your art. Your hopes. Take back your reality. Just peel away the corruption, then cultivate with sun, rain and whispering stars.

This is but one of several details revealed by a woman who claims she was once the sex slave of America’s most wanted man.

Sudanese poet and novelist Kola Boof, who says she was kept against her will as Bin Laden’s mistress for four months in 1996, makes the revelation in her new autobiography.

In ‘Diary of a Lost Girl’, excerpts of which appear in Harper’s Bazaar magazine, Boof claims: “Osama kept coming back to Whitney Houston. He asked if I knew her personally when I lived in America. I told him I didn’t.

“He told me Whitney was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen.

“He said that he had a paramount desire for her and although he claimed music was evil, he spoke of someday spending vast amounts of money to go to America and try to arrange a meeting.”

Bin Laden wanted to shower the ‘I Will Always Love You’ singer with presents and convert her to Islam, claimed Boof who, until recently, was a writer for soap opera ‘Days Of Our Lives’.

“He said he wanted to give her a mansion he owned in a suburb of Khartoum.

“He would say how beautiful she is, what a nice smile she has, how truly Islamic she is but is just brainwashed by American culture and by her husband — Bobby Brown, whom Osama talked about having killed, as if it were normal to have women's husbands killed,” the 37-year-old writer claimed.

“He explained to me that to possess Whitney, he would be willing to break his colour rule and make her one of his wives.”

Boof claims Bin Laden raped her and kept her prisoner in a hotel in Morocco. She has previously said she had to take her son out of a school in Los Angeles after rumours circulated that his father was the al-Qaeda mastermind.

In her autobiography she reckons Bin Laden also had a taste for Western literature.

“In his briefcase I would come across photographs of the Star magazine, as well as copies of Playboy,” she wrote.

He would also “ramble on” about his favourite TV shows ‘Miami Vice’, ‘The Wonder Years’ and ‘MacGyver’, she claimed.

One can present it more scientifically, in that we have all been slowly driven to complete insanity as loud men with guns jump from our screens, blasting away, hunting down, killing repeatedly, our machinery churning day and night to pump more and more killing, threatening, "law enforcement," now children before they can think being triggered with video killing. We are all programmed as a global killing machine, embodied by our families and neighbors in tanks, jets, massive aircraft carriers, battleships, submarines, missile silos, computer screens on the hunt. Our global war is now infecting outer space, satellites tracking us all and our enemies, killer X-Ray beams at the ready to burn a hole in the planet. Of course we have gone mad.

Only madmen and militarists would ever approve of our "new millennium horrorshow" under the Republican rule of the Bush criminal family, Cheney and his corporate cohorts, the CIA-- even our slave-owning founding fathers, those great white icons carved into the Black Hills, would be horrified at the fascist mental slavery we are living under, and such defeated compliance with levels of corruption as to qualify as a "nation of thieves & liars." Such stark reality and truth are apparent to those who are victims of our White House and so-called "intelligence agency" attacks.

The game-show media bubble we are all trapped in is a maze of mirrors, smoke, repetitive "polling" & other perception management tools, largely influenced by secretive PR firms and the layers of government & intelligence agencies, keeping us all daily mesmerized, semi-confused, gossip-mongering, and fundamentally "full of shit." The crowds of bullies in Florida and Fox News decided that Bush 43 would rule over us, not our democracy. Crowds of white bullies now chant "drill baby drill" as they elbow any chance of actual issues being addressed out of the way. Or history. Or the "reality on the ground" of our world in desperate ruins, surrounded by killing machinery, maimed children and burned-out wastelands. Once upon a time money was the root of this wickedness. Now it's OIL & all of its by-products. Gasoline seeps into our very souls.

Madness & war of course have gone hand in hand across the centuries, laying waste to one empire after another, piles of skeletons and ruins their memorials. The American Empire, with its white supremacist and slavery roots, trumps all history in the ability to lay waste to the entire planet, to grind under our gigantic machines and robot bombers anyone who decides to fight back. And then to pretend that we are spreading our goodness and freedom, and really live in a pseudo-reality of manipulated and censored media, almost completely ignorant of what is actually going on, what the true cost of our fat asses is.

No confronting the ruling party with their crimes of a century, the Neo-Nazi movement behind the Bush family, entrenched in Texas & Argentina, the mafiosos & liquor lords of Arizona and Sin City behind McCain, the KKK, oil companies & hunting lobby behind Sarah Palin. Let's all pretend real hard that Barack Obama is not African American, then we can attack him and feel we aren't being racist, push all those people of color back to their places please. Our blond white ladies have so much more to say, on every channel, and everyone must pay attention to what they believe. Painful 9/11 Truth

Many technical analyses cast doubt on the official explanation of the collapse of three World Trade Center buildings, including those presented by an impressive new group: Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth. More difficult than discovering the truth, however, is convincing most of the public to accept the bitter truth.

Americans easily block out painful truths. Powerful societal forces keep much of the population distracted and uninterested in complex issues. Entertainment-oriented mainstream media contribute to mass ignorance. And the political establishment often buries the truth, uses propaganda and manipulates citizens. Intelligent, strong-willed people can fight all these.

But on a deeper level, many truths are blocked psychologically, because they produce too much pain. This results when truths sharply disagree with strongly held beliefs. The conflict produces cognitive dissonance that can block full acceptance of the disturbing truth. People fall victim to self-manipulation and self-delusion. Truths are dismissed and false beliefs remain embedded.

When it comes to 9/11, we face the strong belief that only Al-Qaeda caused 9/11. But analyses by many experts reveal the collapse of three WTC buildings was not caused by the two airplanes exploding into the two towers. Without getting into details that one can spend many hours examining on a number of websites, the general view is that the buildings were brought down by controlled demolition.

If correct - IF - the immediate reaction is like a cosmic big bang. It would have taken considerable effort by a number of people with expertise and access to the buildings to rig them so that they could be intentionally collapsed when the two jets hit the towers. Tough questions flood in: Who could have engineered all this? Could foreign agents accomplish such complex actions - and if they did, why not take credit for it? If Americans did it, why would they intentionally inflict inevitable mass death and devastation? Worse, they seemingly knew about the plan to fly the jets into the towers.

Post-9/11, why have the government and official investigations not come to the same controlled demolition conclusion? This might be explained if the government was involved.

Pull one string and the whole 9/11 story unravels as your imagination triggers unending questions. Can Americans support a reinvestigation and rethinking of the 9/11 event? Or would they rather avoid even more pain and preserve the official account that places all blame on Al-Qaeda? So easy to criticize those who offer different explanations as conspiracy nuts.

After all, the new truth would be so shocking that we would have to question our political and government system. Could there have been such malevolence somewhere in our government? Did a monumental conspiracy push us into attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq? Did petroleum and corporate interests shape 9/11?

Like other groups, Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth wants a new, honest and comprehensive study that considers all the evidence for controlled demolition. First, let the technical truth emerge. Then, if necessary, cope with the inevitable political, conspiracy and other questions. But let us not allow a possible painful truth block the primary task of determining once and for all what caused the collapse of the WTC towers and building no. 7.

If there were non-Muslim forces - possibly U.S. government ones - that played a major role in the WTC catastrophe, then let us have the courage to face the truth. Suppose some element of our government played a secret, awful role. If we do not uncover it, then we are vulnerable to repeat nefarious and unimaginable activity in the future - possibly to impact the 2008 presidential election. Discovering 9/11 truth would enshrine the wisdom of the old adage: the truth hurts. That means suffering the pain of revealing lies and cover-ups. Mourning over the deaths of building victims and heroic first responders would expand with new anger. And another reason to hate and oppose the Iraq war would surface.

If those that believe the official 9/11 story - especially elected officials - trust their views, then let them support a serious investigation to test the validity of the controlled demolition hypothesis. If they fear and reject doing so, then let us see that as suspicious and unacceptable.

Parker Says Snake in Weeds Promo Is Real

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Posing naked for a publicity photo for her offbeat Showtime comedy series "Weeds" was no big deal for Mary-Louise Parker. It was the snake that bothered her.

"I didn't think I was going to do it actually," the 43-year-old actress told AP Radio News in a recent interview. "But then, they were there and the snake was there, and I didn't want the snake to win, so I put the snake on.

"And actually, I grew to really love the snake - by the end of the day."

Parker is shown with the snake over her shoulder and down her back. In one Showtime ad, David Duchovny, who stars in the new series "Californication," is shown with the snake coming over his back, its head on his bare shoulder. He's tossing an apple, with a big bite taken out of it, into the air.

"I've been naked quite a bit, actually," Parker said of posing for the photo. "You Google me, you'll see it all."

The third season of "Weeds," which also stars Kevin Nealon, Elizabeth Perkins and newcomer Matthew Modine, was to premiere Monday night, followed by the series premiere of "Californication."

Parker stars as a widowed suburban mother who starts selling marijuana to support her family in "Weeds."

The actress won an Emmy Award for "Angels in America." She's won two Golden Globe Awards, one for "Angels in America," the other for "Weeds," and had a recurring role on NBC's "The West Wing." Her screen credits include "Fried Green Tomatoes," "Boys on the Side" and "The Client."

Virtual Sex Machine Spawns Lawsuit

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Kevin Alderman didn't bring sex to "Second Life." He just made it better.

The 46-year-old entrepreneur recognized four years ago that people would pay to equip their online selves - which start out with the smooth anatomy of a Barbie or Ken doll - with realistic genitalia and even more to add some sexy moves.

Business at Eros LLC has been brisk. One of his creations, the SexGen Platinum, has gotten so popular that he's now had to hire lawyers to track down the flesh-and-blood person behind the online identity, or avatar, that he says illegally copied and sold it.

The $45 SexGen animates amorous avatars in erotic positions. It is software code, written in the scripting language of "Second Life" and placed in virtual furniture and other objects. Avatars click on the object and choose from a menu of animated sex acts.

Alderman filed a civil lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Tampa, Fla., last month alleging an avatar named "Volkov Catteneo" broke the program's copy protection and sold unauthorized copies. Alderman, who runs his business from home in a Tampa suburb, allows users to transfer his products, but prohibits copying.

"We confronted him about it and his basic response was, 'What are you going to do? Sue me?'" Alderman said. "I guess the mentality is that because you're an avatar ... that you are untouchable. The purpose of this suit is not only to protect our income and our product, but also to show, yes, you can be prosecuted and brought to justice."

Catherine Smith, director of marketing for "Second Life" creator Linden Lab, said she knew of no other real-world legal fight between two avatars.

However, Linden Labs itself has been sued more than once by subscribers over seizures of virtual property. In 2005, Japanese media reported that a Chinese exchange student was arrested for stealing virtual items from other players in an online game, "Lineage II."

"Second Life" isn't a game. There are no dragons to slay or other traditional game objectives. San Francisco-based Linden Lab describes it as "an online digital world imagined, created & owned by its residents."

Linden Lab provides a free basic avatar, a 3-D virtual representation of the user in male or female form. Everything else costs real money. A 16-acre virtual island costs $1,675 plus monthly maintenance fees of $295. Virtual money, called Lindens, can be exchanged with real dollars at an average rate of about 270 Lindens per $1.

Avatars can be equipped with flowing gowns and tiny tattoos, and users with programming and Photoshop skills can reshape themselves into a virtual Greta Garbo or just about any shape imaginable. With a little cash, users can also have people like Alderman transform the avatars for them.

At Alderman's "Second Life" shop, shoppers can try out a dragon bed powered by one of his SexGen engines. Along with programmers and designers, he employs a sales staff who hang around the shop like real salespeople to pitch the perfect sex toys. He is investing in a $25,000 motion-capture suit, a low-end version of one used to create digital characters in movies, to create more realistic sex moves for "Second Life" avatars.

As customers demand more real life in their "Second Life," though, these virtual creations can collide with reality.

"Virtually every aspect of real life is getting duplicated, and all the laws that can be applied to the real world are being applied in 'Second Life,'" said Jorge Contreras Jr., an intellectual-property attorney in Washington, D.C.

Last year, "Second Life" was rocked by a scandal over users who had modified their avatars to look like children and simulated pedophilia. Last month, Linden Lab shut down gambling in "Second Life" after concerns arose that virtual games of chance might violate U.S. gambling laws when members cashed in Lindens for real money.

Now comes Alderman's SexGen suit, which was filed July 3 and seeks unspecified damages. It accuses the unknown owner of the Catteneo avatar of violating copyright and trademark protections by copying, distributing and selling copies of Alderman's software.

Alderman's attorney, Francis X. Taney Jr. of Philadelphia, said the lawsuit has gotten a lot of attention because it involves sex, but is fundamentally about long-established law.

Elvis Fans Boost Economies of 2 States

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Even from beyond the grave, Elvis Presley still generates big bucks. That's even more true this week.

Fans from Europe, Asia, Australia, South America - and even from exotic locales like Kansas - are spending their hard-earned money for T-shirts, coffee mugs, salt and pepper shakers, refrigerator magnets and other trinkets during the events commemorating his death 30 years ago.

Many are making the 110-mile trek from Memphis, Tenn., where the King of Rock 'n' Roll enjoyed his fame and gaudy fortune in Graceland, to Tupelo, the northeast Mississippi city where Elvis came into the world on Jan. 8, 1935, in a tiny shotgun shack built by his father.

They're also filling hotel rooms as far away as northwest Mississippi's casino row in Tunica and are spending money on meals, rental cars and gasoline, giving a significant, although difficult to quantify, boost to the area's economy.

Dick Guyton, executive director of the Elvis Presley Memorial Foundation in Tupelo, estimated that fans will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars there and at area hotels and stores this week, which - even at the birthplace - is the busiest of the year for Elvis tourism.

The more lucrative earnings are in Memphis. Last year, Graceland took in $27 million in revenue, and the overall Elvis business brings in more than $40 million a year for CKX Inc. (CKXE), the New York-based company that controls most Elvis enterprises.

That made the King the second-highest grossing dead celebrity in 2006, behind only Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, according to Forbes magazine.

About 3,000 people went to Tupelo this past Saturday for an annual Fan Appreciation Day, and Guyton predicted the visitor totals could reach 5,000 by Friday.

Lillian Dunk, a 65-year-old homemaker from Birmingham, England, said she and her financial-broker husband have traveled to Tupelo every year since 1997 to feed her Elvis addiction.

"I'm just absolutely mad about Mr. Presley," said Dunk, who uses her favorite Elvis tune, the inspirational "If I Can Dream," as her cell phone ring tone.

Dunk said she and her husband are traveling with her sister and sister's husband for the 10-day trip. They're staying at a casino hotel in Tunica, about 20 miles south of Memphis. And, she wasn't shy in saying she and her husband were planning to spend about 4,000 British pounds - roughly $8,000 - not including air fare.

"I get withdrawal symptoms if I don't come every year," she said in a telephone interview from the birthplace. "I just absolutely love the place. I adore it. I just feel so relaxed here."

In Memphis on Wednesday, thousands of Presley fans braved 105-degree heat as they wound down Graceland's driveway in a graveside procession in advance of the 30th anniversary of the singer's death, on Thursday.

The heat led to the death of a fan from New Jersey, a 67-year-old woman. The Memphis Fire Department said it also treated at least six people overcome by heat, including an 8-year-old boy who was hospitalized.

Steve Martin, spokesman for the tourism division of the Mississippi Development Authority, said the agency doesn't specifically track spending for Elvis tourism. But he said for all tourists, the state figures two people traveling for three days will spend roughly $750.

In Tennessee, no one keeps exact figures, but the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau estimated up to 75,000 people would be drawn to town for the anniversary week.

Even hotels, museums and restaurants not specifically targeted for Elvis-related events may have reason to hope, authorities said.

"We would have a crossover with the Elvis fans in terms of blues music," Martin said. "If they're that close to the birthplace of the blues, they might go other places, too."

Norway's Princess To Teach How To Talk To Angels

Norwegian Princess Martha Louise announced that she is clairvoyant and wants to help people by teaching them how to talk to angels.

The 35-year-old trained physical therapist and daughter of King Harald and Queen Sonja said on a Web site for her alternative education centre that she has been communicating with angels since childhood.

The Astarte Education centre which she co-founded promises to teach students to "create miracles" in their lives "with angels and with your own force".

"I've always been interested in alternative forms of treatment," Martha Louise said in a statement on Web site http://www.astarte-education.com.

"It was while I dealt with horses that I first got in touch with angels. I later came to understand the value of this enormous gift and would like to share it with others."

The Royal Palace confirmed that the Web site accurately reflected the Princess's views but declined further comment.

Martha Louise's younger brother, Crown Prince Haakon is next in line for the Norwegian throne.

The alternative centre's three-year programme costs 24,000 Norwegian crowns ($4,191) per year.

The tall, slender woman strolled into the shop in the town of Doemitz on the warm afternoon and bought cigarettes, petrol station employee Ines Swoboda told Reuters on Monday.

"I wasn't surprised because she's come in naked before -- she's a very nice woman," Swoboda said, adding none of the other customers was bothered. The woman could have faced charges of creating a public disturbance if anyone had complained.

A quick-witted customer did, however, snap pictures of the woman believed to be about 30 years old as she walked back to a waiting Ferrari and climbed into the passenger seat. Several of those photos appeared in the German media on Monday.

Wanted: Naked adults for Greenpeace:
August 18 and 19 on Alpine Glaciers

Geneva - Greenpeace said on Wednesday it was looking for hundreds of volunteers to parade in the nude on an ice-cold Swiss glacier for an environmental campaign about global warming.

The Swiss branch of the environmental group said it was looking for as many adult volunteers as possible to take part in the publicity campaign, to be shot by photographer Spencer Tunick.

The campaign is aimed at drawing attention to melting Alpine glaciers, a clear sign of global warming and man-made climate change according to the organisation.

Greenpeace said the human body was as vulnerable as the glaciers and the world's environment. The campaign group hopes the sight of people exposed to the cold will help mobilise public opinion and politicians.

"We have to act without delay, otherwise it will be too late," Greenpeace Switzerland campaign director Markus Alleman said in a statement.

"Even though the facts are clear, they're obviously not enough to make the decision makers act. It's time to stir people's emotions," he added.

Tunick is renowned for his spectacular photoshoots involving hundreds if not thousands of naked people grouped in carefully chosen poses around landmarks. He calls them "living sculptures" or "body landscapes".

His backdrops have include the Gateshead Centre for Contemporary Art in Britain (2005), the Biennale in Lyon, France (2005), a bridge in Cleveland, Ohio (2004) and Grand Central Station in New York (2003).

About 18,000 nudes posed for the US-born photographer in Mexico City's Zocalo Square in May.

The Alpine photo session at an undisclosed location in Switzerland is being scheduled for August 18 and 19, when summer sunshine normally soothes the impact of freezing temperatures at high altitude in the mountains.

Volunteers applying on Greenpeace Switzerland's website were promised that they "won't be naked for very long".

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A New Zealand couple is looking to call their newborn son Superman -- but only because their chosen name of 4Real has been rejected by the government registry.

Pat and Sheena Wheaton say they will get around the decision by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages by officially naming their son Superman but referring to him as 4Real, the New Zealand Herald newspaper has reported.

The Wheatons decided on the name after seeing the baby for the first time in an ultrasound scan and realizing their baby was "for real."

They decided 4Real was the best way to write it, but the name was rejected because the registrar said a name had to be a sequence of characters.

Pat Wheaton said he was considering appealing against the decision through the courts, but whatever happens he won't be budged on his choice.

"No matter what its going to stay 4Real," Wheaton told the Herald, "I'm certainly not a quitter."

A spokesman for the Department of Internal Affairs, which operates the registry told the Herald discussions with the Wheatons about their son's name were continuing.

The baby is now two months old, after the Wheatons first applied to register his name in later June.
